Update:4/28/25 - NWCG has fixed the print quality issue with the new addition of PMS412. If you had previously downloaded the document, please discard the file and redownload. We have added the document back to our website. It can be downloaded here. As of today, NWCG has yet to updated the download link for PMS412 on the NWCG website.
FI210 was completed last week. The draft Power Points are being submitted to NWCG publish this week. The updated course should be available in the next couple months.
The new version of PMS412 Guide to Wildland Fire Origin and Cause Determination has been published. A pdf is available from the NWCG website and can be downloaded here. SWAIT contributors Scott Fischer and Ed Nordskog rewrote the new Chapter 8: Wildfire Arson Recognition (formerly Chapter 7: Arson Recognition). The new version of the document includes updates to the cause categories. This update reflects the changes made by NWCG to the cause categories in 2021. There are other updates throughout the document. Make sure you start this year’s fire season right by reading PMS412. Printed copies will be available to purchase from NWCG at a later date.
FI210 is also being updated to reflect the changes made in the new addition of PMS412. The update is primarily focused on the power point presentations, indicator test and written exam. The new presentations will be reviewed by the NWCG Wildland Fire Investigation Subcommittee during their next meeting the week of April 21. After this meeting the presentations will be sent to NWCG publishing. The date of public release for the new presentations has not been set. Publishing will likely take a several months to complete. We will put out an updated post once we hear when they will be released.
The NWCG Wildland Fire Investigation Subcommittee is working on a new FI210 course template in the Wildland Fire Learning Portal. Once the new materials are approved, the Learning Portal template will be released for those who would like to use the Learning Portal to administer the course.
