NWCG Wildland Fire Investigation Subcommittee - Updates
The National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Wildland Fire Investigation Subcommittee (WFISC) is responsible for the development of wildland fire investigation standards, certifications, qualifications, and training. They are best known for their FI courses FI110, FI210, and FI310. The WFISC membership is made up of both primary and associate members. The primary members are from major U.S. federal land management agencies and the National Association of State Foresters, while the associate members are from international agencies and private industry. The WFISC has international representation from both Canada and Australia.
Over the past several years, the WFISC has been working to update their courses and the PMS 412 Guide to Wildland Fire Origin and Cause Determination.
FI110 Wildland Fire Observations and Origin Scene Protection for First Responders was updated in 2021. The course is available on the WFISC website. They are currently working with a contractor to publish a self-paced, self-registered web version of the course. They expect to have this version of the course available in early 2024.
FI210 Wildland Fire Origin and Cause Determination was last updated in 2016. The WFISC is currently working on an update to the course. This update should be published in 2024 or early 2025.
PMS 412 is the companion guide for FI210. The guide was also last updated in 2016. The WFISC is working on an update for the guide to go with the updated version of FI210 and should be published in 2024 or early 2025.
FI310 Wildland Fire Investigation: Case Development was last updated in 2011. The WFISC has been working on an update for this course over the past several years. They have conducted two beta courses since 2022 and expect to publish the new course in 2024.
